Pasa Robles
10-Aug-96

All's Fair... STYX played the last night of this year's Mid-State Fair in Pasa Robles, California last night. Dennis told the crowd "See that Ferris Wheel over there? Chuck and I have been there since we played here in 1991!" Then Tommy said something about the band not being there for 13 years. The discrepancy? Glen Burtnik was in the band in 1991. Then later in the set, the look on Dennis' face when Tommy worked the name of the town into the second verse of "Lights" was one of sheer amazement. And it is obvious TS loves his new Taylor acoustic 12-string. When Keith and JJ came out to exchange his Hamer Explorer for it after the first chorus of "Crystal Ball", he didn't seem to want to give it up! JY was the first to take advantage of the massive ramps on either side of the stage and was often a blur, as he whipped the fans into a frenzy, teasing them as he flowed from one side to the other. Once again, at the hotel, almost everyone changed rooms if they were not taking full advantage of the great views and fresh air. Chuck was heard to say "It is great to be back in California!" Matthew, Suzanne and Jeanne made the rounds at the midway while the band played, coming back with stuffed animals they'd won, silver bracelets and rings they'd bought and the smell of gunpowder from a shooting gallery where they got beat out of the big prize by a 6 year old boy. None of them seemed to want to talk much about that! At the San Luis Obispo Airport this morning, it seemed as if EVERY person there, including passengers, cab drivers, car rental people, airline personnel and police had seen STYX perform the night before. "It was surreal. It was like something out of an old Twilight Zone," Todd said when he arrived in Portland, Oregon later in the day. The band has the rest of the day off
