2120 Signals New Era For STYX

CHESS STUDIOS

MAY 29, 2004

When JY called me and told me about driving by 2120 S. Michigan, and suddenly finding himself in the building, making contact with it's inhabitants, who turned out to be Kevin Mabry, Marie Dixon and others who now run the Willie Dixon Blues heaven Foundation, I sensed there was something more than just curiosity on his part. It was as if an embryo had been created out of the love of music, and a new relationship began, linking us to the roots of Chicago Blues in a way I don't think any of us could have anticipated. In the months since JY's epiphany, support for our cause of breathing new life into Willie Dixon's dream has gained more and more momentum, and soon our recordings there will be post produced and ready for release. Already word is spreading throughout the music community and we believe it won't be long before other friends of ours find themselves there at 2120, recording in the magical rooms of "Chess Studios" where so many before us found inspiration in the ethereal atmosphere between its walls.

Now for us to be invited to Eric Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festival, we seem to be riding the wave of this exploration of our roots. Suddenly our sound checks and dressing room rehearsals are about songs from our pasts, songs we have in common enough to sit and play together. Last night it was "We Gotta Get Outa This Place" and "House of the Rising Sun" as we were waiting out our 5 minute call for showtime.

For JY, I believe it has also been an awakening for himself as a guitarist. I have always had a great admiration for him as a player, while I think he has in his own humble way brushed off this kind of thing as the age of "Shredding" has overshadowed the more old fashioned blues based guitarists like him and me. But lately, as we've been working on the 2120 sessions and preparing for the Clapton gig, his true self has emerged more and more and I'm hearing him dig in and express himself more soulfully and enthusiastically than I have in decades.

We have all been inexorably changed by this one phone call from JY's cell phone as he drove down Michigan Avenue this past winter.
