Saratoga RULED!
MOUNTAIN WINERY
SARATOGA, CA
SEPTEMBER 30, 2004
Photo: Daniel Wills
Hello Friends,
Last night we closed the concert season at Mountain Winery in Saratoga,
California, playing to a very attentive and excited sold out crowd
who came from all over the Bay Area to spend a crisp, clear California
evening with STYX. Meanwhile, on a debate set in Florida, as President
Bush and John Kerry were sizing each other up in what for them must
be as excruciating a campaign as it is becoming for the rest of us,
we were ROCKING the hills above San Jose. Wanna bet who had more fun?
Nyuk nyuk...
JY's friend Doug Wilson, his lovely missus and friends, as well as
Mark and Wendy Altekruse were among a long list of beautiful people
who graced our backstage. It was a supremely down home yet San Francisco-esque
chic setting for us to entertain guests--a picturesque mountaintop
winery suited for a layout in any number of A List magazines, but for
us a stage, a dressing room and seats for fans. It's an intimate venue
with limited space for anything more than our basic configuration--no
frills, but enough room for the band members, yet there is a vibe there
that rivals our other favorite outdoor venue, The Gorge, a massive
natural amphitheater overlooking the Columbia River in Washington State.
It was quite chilly as we waited to start the show, but we dressed
accordingly and so did the fans so the weather was never an issue.
From the first notes of "Blue Collar Man" things sounded
exceptionally good in my in ear monitors. My guitar had a big beefy,
woody sound with a nice top end, and I assumed everyone else's mix
sounded equally as good. It must have because I detected a little extra
heat coming from every single other band member. So off we went, banging
our way through the set. My white Les Paul Custom was like bottled
lightning in my hands, and the same was true with the Gibson 356, the
Fender Jazzmaster Baritone, my '63 Les Paul, Jr., and every other guitar
Jimmy handed me all night. It was pure heaven.
As it always happens, the two hours and change went by in a flash
and soon we were saying so long to our guests and heading down the
5 to drop Todd off at home before turning back up the 101 heading for
Ventura. I rolled in around 5:45 this morning and Clyde and Bubba (our
dogs) were too excited to let me sleep, and even now Clyde, our yellow
Lab is resting his chin on my right wrist, looking up at me as if to
say, "I haven't seen you for a week and you come in and get on
line?" He's right, you know.
I'll cut it short so I can play with my boys. Thanks to everyone who
made last night so much fun, and we'll see the rest of you tonight
at the Majestic Theater. Come on out and play!
