CRYSTAL GRAND MUSIC THEATER
WISCONSIN DELLS, WI
AUGUST 14, 2004
Hello Friends,
We're in Springfield, Illinois this afternoon, after driving overnight
from The Dells in Wisconsin where we played to a packed house last
night.
I don't know how it is for you, but to me there are things in life
that you cannot hold in your thoughts or even sense memory. Like a
beautiful romantic experience, for instance. When you are in the midst
of it, you feel as though you've never felt so good before. And perhaps
you haven't. This is what it's like for us when we have a performance
like last night's in Wisconsin. We were in such a euphoric mood in
the dressing room afterwards we all felt as if we needed a smoke, if
you know what I mean. I know we've had this feeling many times before
but all we seem to remember at this juncture is last night. It was
like a symphonic crescendo that kept rising to the climactic ending
with every movement leading us there, knowing it would satisfy us completely,
if for only one night.
We're addicted to chasing this euphoria and when we're given free
reign, not limited to a strict curfew as is the case in so many of
today's venues, we get the opportunity to stretch and prolong the experience.
Last night, in the cozy confines of the Crystal Ballroom, before 2000
STYX fans, we did just that.
Most reviewers would have little chance distinguishing a night like
this from any other, because they tend to think too much, searching
for a critical foothold, and in doing so never give into the urge of
letting go and taking the ride. Martin Luther King described this beautifully
as "paralysis of analysis." It's a voyeuristic job and one
I don't envy. But you and I know what it's like, when you give in early
to the tug of your life experiences connecting with a song or a lyric
that are forever conjoined and in doing so accept every other melody
and verse as a conjunction to the next one, riding the wave until the
house lights come on. We feel it when this happens and THAT's why we
look forward to suiting up, why we don't notice the details of traveling
great distances to get there. It's the same reason our crew doesn't
complain about the daily obstacles they must overcome to put up the
show and take it down at the end of the evening.
It's a beautiful obsession of ours and hopefully it will continue
to be yours until we're all called to join Ray Charles at the great
concert venue in the sky.
Tonight we'll have a shot at it again. Do you see why they call this "PLAYING
in a band" not "WORKING in a band?" Yes, my friends,
it's a sickness and I pray that no one ever finds a cure.
See you tonight!
TS
