Q104 Christmas Bash
DECEMBER 7, 2004
Hello New York! Do we know how to pick the party? Better yet, do we know when to say yes when invited? Bob Buckmann and friends threw a great one tonight at Webster Hall, once known as "The Ritz" as I found out after having a strange case of deja vu entering the building for sound check this afternoon. Fantastic old ROCK HALL where more legendary acts have played than there is room to mention. We had no idea it would be like a family reunion party with friends like Pat St. John and Carol Miller and other radio personalities we've know for many moons dropping by the dressing room to say hello before and after our performance. While there we made sure they all got a sneak preview of our video for "I Am The Walrus" on JY's G4 PowerBook, and the station even played it on three huge video screens before we started, so everyone in the house got a sneak preview before it airs on VH1 Classic. Earlier in the day we taped an unplugged performance at Q104 where we played "Fooling Yourself, Blue Collar Man (2120 version), and Walrus" before chatting with Zach Martin on the air, and Maria Milito and other friends off the air there. After being off for a few days it felt good to flex our muscles with a good acoustic test of our skills. We even did a short version of "Bend Me Shape Me" with Gary Loizzo, our engineer for decades who was also the singer of the band who had a number one hit with the same song. That was a first for Gary--singing and mixing himself at the same time! It was just that kind of a show, very spontaneous and very loose, but man did it sound good! I tell you, for something that technically falls under the category as "work" this was so much damn fun today it hardly seems like that word describes it. Perhaps that's why what we do is called "playing." On the way back to the hotel from sound check Lawrence was telling me about meeting May Pang when he and JY were in New York a couple of weeks ago. I asked if he'd invited her, and he said he had meant to but it had slipped his mind, but decided to call her once we got to the hotel. She and her friend Christine decided to take Lawrence up on his invitation and drove in together to see us. May had gotten a copy of "Walrus" from us a few days ago and wanted to hear it for herself. We had a blast chatting with her after the show, getting her thoughts on our version, and hearing some classic John Lennon stories. And it turned out that Christine is friends with Tamara Conniff our friend who just left the Hollywood Reporter to become managing editor of Billboard Magazine in NYC. Were your ears burning, Tamara? ;-) Thanks for coming ladies, it was a pleasure. Now, it is actually 2:00 AM Tuesday morning and later today we'll head over to see Eric Sherman and the gang at VH1 to cut some drop-ins for VH1 Classic and whatever else they have in mind for us. It's been so long since we had a new video it feels like the first time again. We're very excited for you all to see the "Walrus" video, and it won't be long, so hang in there. Until then, happy holidays from all of us minding the store. TS
