We Love Alaska!

ALASKA STATE FAIR
PALMER, AK
AUGUST 26, 2004

Hello Friends,

Last night we performed before one of the most enthusiastic, most resilient audiences we can ever recall. Even though we spent less that 48 hours in Anchorage, where our hotel was and Palmer where the show was held, we felt the spirit of the people loud and clear. You'd have to be made of concrete not to. When we heard that the first major storm all summer was scheduled the day of our show. Temperatures were expected to drop, rain was coming and so we were obviously concerned about the turnout. . That was until we mentioned it to locals. It was met with a resounding look of disbelief and a hearty, "This is Alaska." That said it all.

The show was sold out and it's difficult to say which was more intoxicating--the indescribable backdrop of the Chugach Mountain peaks, or the beaming countenance of the fans themselves. I have heard of this Alaskan spirit, but it takes being there amongst the people to truly appreciate it. Maybe I have lived in mega metropolitan world for so long that I am desensitized to how guarded we are in general. But I'm from Alabama, and you don't shake that no matter where you end up. I am used to friendly people. But there is a relaxed, unabashed self-confidence that exudes from the personalities of every single Alaskan we met. Many knew who we were and were excited to meet us, but just as many treated us with the same courtesy and friendliness before the subject came up of where we were from and why we were there. Down to the last minute as we stood on the curb at LAX this morning at 6:30 AM after an overnight flight, waiting for our tour bus to pull up, a cute Alaskan female who'd been on our Anchorage to LA flight approached Ricky to find out who we were and what we'd been doing there.

When we got the offer to play this gig in Alaska, it really wasn't an optimum routing and didn't make the kind of practical sense to do because it meant that we would have to make some concessions equipment-wise since our main semi-trailer with our band gear had to be in the Los Angeles area the next night (tonight). But we wanted to do it and our crew was game. The stage was small, the area was somewhat remote but we were assured that if we built it they would come, and this all came to be. What a payoff for our collective hunch.

We had, and frankly still have a bad case of Alaska Fever. In the words of Chester, the man who gave me my first tattoo, as he was still filling in the black ink, "You'll be back..." Alaska is permanently tattooed on our souls now and we cannot wait to go back.

Our thanks to everyone there who made it so unforgettable. We'll see you again!

TS
